H.R.1955: Violent Radicalization & Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act
Below from Wendy on C_3 list.  First is a letter from the pig, Senator Vitter.  Below that is an addendum by Wendy.

It sure seems to me that Congress has been reading the same page as I have been reading, but instead of working to end the injustices, those twits want to have a stronger police state to protect their ruling class interests.  Do these people not understand what a dangerous mess they are going to cause?   Are they really that stupid?  Or do they just not believe that angry mobs will probably one day tear them to shreds?  Don't they teach about the bloodbath of the French Revolution anymore???

====================================

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this important issue.

As you may know, the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act would establish new features focused on the prevention of terrorism by individuals born, raised, or based and operating primarily in the United States . This bill would establish a grant program aimed at preventing radicalization through funding a university-based center for the study of such issues. The bill also would prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from using this measure to violate the constitutional rights and civil liberties of U.S. citizens and lawful residents.

I certainly understand and share your concern that legislation that seeks to protect us has the potential to diminish personal privacy. I have been fighting to make sure the federal government does not infringe on our constitutionally- protected freedoms. In our current war against terrorism, I believe we can find a proper balance that would allow us to work to prevent terrorist attacks while also not infringing on our rights. My goal is to do whatever is necessary to protect our national security without infringing on the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Please rest assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind as I continue to closely monitor this issue in the U.S. Senate.

Once again, thank you for sharing your views with me. Please feel free to contact me in the future about issues of concern to you and your family.

 Sincerely,
Senator David Vitter
United States Senator

There are homegrown terrorists. Remember the Oklahoma City bombing? I'm considerably more worried about crazy fundies and mad gun-totting survivalists than crazy Muslims, because the fundies and survivalists mostly live here. This bill isn't about stopping peaceful protests, it's about stopping abortion-clinic bombers (or for that matter people who want to throw bombs for causes you and I agree with). I'm all for stopping such people. I've also seen nothing in this bill that looks problematic.

If cops attack peaceful protestors, the cops then act like the peaceful protestors are domestic terrorists and act without restraint in violation of constitutional rights..

Except that this bill does nothing of the sort.

Reading the handwriting on the wall is something I feel I am good at.

Eventually, the poor and disinfranchised will be in open revolt. Police will get shot. Property will be trashed. Rather than ending social injustice, the ruling class just wants to be ready to crush the revolt.

You know, it's equally possible to use that same logic to dismiss laws against armed robbery or even murder as "tools of oppression". I prefer to look at what a given law actually does. From my PoV, this one does good things.

Rule of thumb of mine: If Vitter sez the bill is OK by him, that is a sure sign it is not.

Fair enough. While federal-level Republicans occasionally support good laws, most often anything they support is bad news.

I'm not saying that Democrats always support good laws, merely that Republicans almost never do.

this letter supposedly from senator vitter, is word for word exactly the same as the letter i got from representative adam smith, several months ago.

do you think that the house and senate have a "generic" message that they send back to anyone whose letters they haven't read? i'm beginning to think that is likely the case. 8/

Could you expand a bit on why you feel it is dangerous?

This Bill criminalizes any act of, or promotion of, anything the Government interprets to be "radical" or "extremist." This may include Animal Rights, Environmentalism, Socialism, Labor Organizing, anything that may upset the status quo, hell anything that may upset a politician. And that's the scary thing here; it's entirely up to State interpretation.

Homeland Security’s sub-committee on terrorism risk assessment convened a hearing on 11-06-2007 to discuss “using the Web as a weapon – the Internet as a tool for violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism.” In a video of this meeting, which was last aired by C-Span on 11-12-2007, members of the sub-committee clearly pointed to Internet sites that question the legitimacy of the official 9/11 story as tools for recruiting terrorists.
During the course of the hearing, Mark Weitzman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center displayed a Power Point Presentation illustrating what his organization considers terrorist recruitment sites. Here is his testimony:
http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/pp.asp?c=fwLYKnN8LzH&b=3577145

To illustrate the trends described above, we have put together a short PowerPoint demonstration. Without going into deep detail in these written remarks, I would like to offer some brief descriptions of the material that will be shown. The presentation begins with a look at how 9/11 is viewed in some eyes online, including those who applauded it as well as some conspiracies sites. The presence of the conspiracy site is significant, since so much of what passes as fact online is actually based on some form of conspiracy...

Next is a series of sites of media portals which show some of the varied methods that the Islamists use to get their message out, including some based on United States servers. These are followed by some looks at charts and other manuals on how to use violence, along with a novel interpretation of jihad that calls for an “electronic jihad.”
..

One of these “media portals” displayed in the Power Point presentation is Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. This site is sandwiched between a Taliban training manual, and several Taliban recruitment sites showing how to make bombs, take captives, and blow buildings up.

Representative Jane Harmon posed the following question to Mark Weitzman regarding the connection between 9/11 “conspiracy theorists” and terrorists: “So this movement develops them into violent killers?” Weitzman stated: “These people are constructing their own version of reality, full of conspiracy theories, full of doctored videos, that will recruit or inflame the emotions.”Bruce Hoffman, a Georgetown University security studies professor, and Chairman of the Rand Corporation in Counterterrorism and Counterinsurgency, agreed that “falsehoods and conspiracy theorists have become so ubiquitous and believed that you almost have some sort of parallel truth, and it has become a very effective tool for recruiting people.” The “people” he is referring to are potential terrorists.
