Scrutinizing Blood Type Diet
        As I mentioned in my previous post, the link to the gall bladder flush had some interesting correlations between heart disease and other conditions and blood type.

        Below the cut are some of the correlations I found interesting.   I made the points which grabbed my attention bold so they would stand out better.

===================================

When I worked in a hospital in Dallas, I use to do the cross matching of blood for open heart surgeries.  They did 6 surgeries each day. Over  the days and weeks I became distressed by the fact that 98% of the people having open heart surgery were people with A+ blood types.  I would check out my antisera (typing serum) and run controls every night, and sometimes recheck my patients because the results baffled me.  On the nights I was not there someone else would cross-match those units of blood for the surgeries.  I looked back at their work.  It correlated with mine.  You see about 38% of the population is O+ and about 34% is A+ (Only 9% is B+).  Therefore,  I should have had about half A+ and half O+ right?  But I didn't.  I worked there for a year and only had a handful of O blood types who underwent open heart surgery and possibly 2 B blood types.  What does this mean?  Well it means there is something to the Blood Type Diet and the Eat Right for Your Type books.  I don't agree with everything in there, but I do know there is some truth to it.

 My father was classic for the standard person fitting this "mold".  He came from a family that had problems with diabetes, though he never was diagnosed with it.  I believe in retrospect that he definitely had insulin resistance, and therefore high insulin levels, but he maintained a healthy pancreas.  My father had severe gallbladder problems when he was in his 30's and had his gallbladder surgically removed.  In those days when they operated on you to remove the gallbladder the incision went from the front all the way around the body to the back.  Recovery took weeks.  Dressings had to be changed daily and the surgical recovery was almost worse than the gallbladder attacks.  In his late 40's (10 years later) he was surprised at how little energy he had.  He often declared that old age was creeping up on him.  Dad had a "tummy" on him though he was not grossly overweight.  Though incredibly active in his youth, he had a desk job as an mechanical engineer to provide for his family.  Physical activity amounted to playing with his children, mowing the yard and taking walks.  Having been married to my mother (who is an O+ blood type) for 25 years and eating the same food as she did, my mother's energy never seemed to wane, yet his did.  He would mow the front yard one day and several days later he would mow the back yard.  He would have to take breaks while mowing because it would be so exhausting.  In hind sight I can also tell you he had those creases in his ear lobes.  Every single person I have met who has had a heart attack has had those creases.

At 51 years of age my father was playing with my first born son and experienced pain in his right arm.  He left him on the couch and went to the bathroom.  He came back, still experiencing pain and then collapsed.  I was there and did CPR on him until the ambulance arrived.  Everything was done for him that could possibly be done, but his heart never restarted and he was gone.  My mother, who is an O blood type, still continues to eat the same foods and seems to have none of the same symptoms.  It has been 18 years since dad passed away and she is still going strong.

I decided that one of the reasons I had developed gallstones was because my gallbladder had not be emptying fully.  For several years prior to the pain I had been on a low fat/vegetarian diet.  I now believe that was one of my problems.  Any organ that is not used can become diseased.  If you are not a vegetarian, you may still be forming stones, but you would probably have a worse problem if you eliminated fats from your diet.

        So that prompted me to look more deeply into the blood type diet.   Looking at the article on Wiki,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_type_diet
it can easily be seen that type A blood type is suppose to eat a diet which is mainly vegan, with no dairy or red meat.   So, from what the observations on the site above, it would sure seem that a vegan low fat diet is 100% WRONG for type A individuals!  The wiki article seems to me to be very biased in favor of the blood type diet.

        Looking further (via google) I was another site which does not have much good to say about the blood type diet.

===================================

There are not many positive things to say about this diet, which is clearly based on science fiction rather than science fact. However, as with any diet, it will get you thinking about what you are currently eating, with the result that you may start to make changes to your diet. Added to this, the blood type diet recommends eating fresh, natural foods and so can help you de-junk your diet by cutting out processed foods, takeaways, booze, chocolate and too many cups of coffee – all of which our ancestors missed out on!

And the cons?

There are plenty. On a practical level, you may need a blood test to discover your blood group if you don’t already know it – and this will mean a trip to your local health centre! Mealtimes may also be impossible if everyone in the family wants to follow the diet, but has a different blood group! But most importantly, it’s just another cranky way of getting people to cut calories – and the most worrying thing about this is that while you’ll probably lose weight, it could also affect your health in the long term. Nevertheless, if you’re still adamant about giving it a go, it’s best to follow it for just a short time (one week or less) and use it to kick-start a longer-term, healthy, weight-loss plan.
Juliette’s verdict

I’m really not a fan of this diet. It’s filled with pseudo-science and has the potential to scare people into avoiding many nutritious foods in an effort to lose weight. It’s also worth bearing in mind that although the diet gives the impression that it’s based on sound scientific research this is, in fact, far from the case. Ultimately, the theory is nonsense.

        So, while there does seem to be a correlation between blood type and medical problems, I feel that the dietary recommendations in the blood type diet are utterly without merit and very dangerous for people with type A blood type, such as myself.

Vegan? Are you KIDDING me?

My diet tends to be heavy on the protein, and my main source is meat and dairy. A mainly-vegan diet would have me sleeping all the damned time.

Oh and yeah, I'm A+.

Vegan diet would have me salivating over young children and stray animals.
